Soooo this session went something like this:
Susan: “Genevieve, this is Susan. I think I’m in the wrong place”. “It’s PACKED here and we don’t see this ‘little house’ you speak of.
Me: “It’s PACKED”? (Silently panicking inside) . “Do you see the red barn?”
Susan: Do you guys see a red barn?
Me: Still silently panicking.
Susan: giggling. ‘you guys’
(Loud laughter, a car FULL of laughter)
What I loved the most about that whole conversation is that I never once heard anyone complain. There was no one talking back or sighing or stressing out. Everyone was giggling like they were on a little adventure. We found each other shortly after that and the place was as lovely as I hoped for. We quietly walked around while mom and dad shared some memories of their family growing up. I was just in quiet awe of what a great little family these 2 had created for themselves. You could just tell they all loved each other and that the bond between them is rock solid.
Susan an her husband have one daughter going off to college in another state and another one a little closer but leaving again for his second year. Their third son is still at home but I’m sure he’ll be off to do amazing things soon too. They hired me to catch this moment in their lives. The milestone of their middle child living off to college. I don’t know what that feels like but I can imagine that it’s 2 parts pride, 2 parts fear and 5 parts anxiety. I’m super honored that I could capture this time for them because I know, It will never look like this again. Here’s a sneak peek:
