When my husband and I found out we were going to have our second child we were so happy but I have to be honest… I was scared as hell. The insecurities just poured into my mind . Can I handle this? How will I juggle a career and 2 kids and my marriage and LIFE? Eventually , I got my mommy legs back and realized that the biggest dreams I’ve ever had were being realized and that I was living the life I have always wanted.
But then sometimes I go into other people’s homes to photograph THEIR families like this one in my hometown of Plymouth, MI and think to myself… Maybe I should have had a few more babies because it’s so heartwarming to see large, close knit families.
I imagine that large families have a sense of authenticity and warmth the a family of four cannot. I imagine that their birthdays, holidays and family BBQ’s will always be filled with wild rumpus and joy that can only happen when the parents are outnumbered.
The differences in personalities blow my mind every single time. Like this lovely older sister who so gently and femininely at her way through this watermelon as if no one was there. Never mind that right behind her is her whole family running around, having fun and hoping to jump right in front of the camera with her.
When you’re part of a big family you know that you are never really alone. There’s always someone by your side admiring you, guiding you & jumping in on the fun with you. Large families know that these sweet family moments go by way too fast and if you don’t take the time to jump in and enjoy them you will miss some of the most intimate, heartwarming times that your lifestyle had to offer.
I live in Plymouth and I can tell you that the family vibe is really strong, this sweet family of five was no exception. I feel honored to be invited into these homes and do not take for granted what they are allowing me to witness.
During this particular family session I was invited to baby brothers one year cake smash session where the whole family decided to dive in and enjoy some fresh watemelon instead. They all stood back watching him smash this fresh new fruit. They all stood back giggled & clapped. No one said one peep about how messy the floor was getting because when you are part of a big family you know that the messes don’t really matter. When you’re part of a big family you are forced to be present in the moment… We should all be so lucky.
