Ann Arbor is an easy location to host a wedding celebration, especially if you’re looking for an alternative to Detroit. As a wedding photographer, I get to experience all kinds of celebrations. Ann Arbor has some unique spots to host your wedding, whether you’re going for a chic , glamorous vibe, a pretty garden or a traditional but gorgeous ballroom in some of UoM’s beautiful facilities. Ann Arbor has amazing options. Here’s a few of my favorites:

THE MICHIGAN UNION

Getting married at the University of Michigan’s Michigan Union offers a historic, elegant setting with versatile spaces like the grand Rogel Ballroom and the classic Pendleton Room, perfect for U of M alumni or anyone looking for that glamorous ballroom feel. The space is light and airy with high ceilings and an overall elevated space.

They also feature in-house catering that your guests will LOVE. If you’re a foodie or you care about your guests meal, you will not be disappointed. They also have very reputable event planning support to help you figure out the details. In short. Gorgeous ballroom, delicious food and a fun downtown destination.

Their service is great and you will have an all inclusive experience with some extra touches and perks plus out of town guests won’t have to drive very far. MATTHAEI BOTANICAL GARDENS

The botanical gardens in Ann Arbor is a one-of-a-kind choice for a couple looking to have a garden wedding. They have 7 different gardens to choose from. Your guests will love walking around and exploring all the beautiful spaces there while they go through your wedding day. You can set your wedding outdoors in one of our formal gardens or spaces, or indoors amid the lush tropical setting of the Conservatory.

Couples can even choose to have their reception in side as well. The indoor reception leaves a lot of room to have it be transformed into an aesthetic that goes well with your vision. If I was getting married there, I would host the reception right outside. Ask to bring in long tables in that green space in front of their English gardens, dress everything up with lots of candles, hire an amazing caterer and have the whole thing outdoors.

The last one I will highlight here is the University Of Michigan Museum of Art UMMA . I won’t go into too many details because they are temporarily closed until January of 2027. It’s a GORGEOUS space. Tall ceilings, modern spaces and gorgeous ball rooms filled with beautiful art to look at. They have a cool space for cocktail hour too. It’s a great alternative for someone who really wants to get married at The DIA in detroit but wants something a little more intimate.
