What to Expect (and What We Love Most). South Asian weddings in Detroit are a whole experience—in the best way. With multiple events, outfit changes, meaningful traditions, and dance floors that stay lively from start to finish, there’s a lot happening… and that’s exactly what makes photographing them so special.

Over the years, working alongside our couples and their families has taught me a lot (and given me a front-row seat to some truly unforgettable celebrations). Below is a friendly breakdown of the main events you’ll often find during a South Asian wedding weekend, what they typically look like, and how we approach photographing each one.

Sangeet (and Sometimes Mehndi): The Party Before the Party

If you’ve ever described your wedding weekend as “a marathon, but make it glamorous,” the Sangeet understands the assignment. Think of it as the South Asian cousin of a welcome party—usually with a larger guest list and lots of time to connect before the ceremony events begin. Some couples host their Sangeet the day before the wedding, while others schedule it even earlier so they can fully enjoy each event without feeling rushed.

Expect bold, vibrant colors (hello reds, yellows, golds, oranges—and sometimes hot pink and purple), great food, and plenty of performances. A lot of Sangeets include choreographed dances, singing, and all-around celebration. Some couples even combine the Sangeet with Mehndi by inviting a henna artist so guests can participate, mingle, and get in on the fun.

And yes—this is where the dance floor energy starts to heat up.

South Asian wedding ceremonies are deeply symbolic and packed with tradition. They’re not designed to be rushed—and they shouldn’t be. Every ritual is done with intention, honoring what came before and celebrating what’s ahead.

Family Is the Heart of It All

At their core, South Asian weddings are about more than two people—they’re about two families coming together. Often, parents and relatives play a huge role in the planning: venue tours, outfit shopping, selecting vendors, and helping keep traditions at the center of the weekend.

That’s why South Asian wedding photography in Detroit isn’t just about “family formals” (though we absolutely do those). It’s about the in-between moments that matter just as much:
